GRAVE FOUND AT CAMP DENISON

Camp Denison volunteer, Bob Goodwin, was surprised while pruning brush along one of the hiking-cross country skiing trails in the woods at Camp Denison. What looked to be a grave site appeared in the leaves along side the path. One might think his first reaction would be to call Chief Mulligan but it wasn’t what he did.. Instead he scraped away the leaves and wood debris from the long ago burial site and found a three foot by six foot mound outlined by stone and mostly covered with smaller rock. This certainly fit the typical dimensions of a grave. Since the potential burial site was obviously old, Goodwin turned to the historical buffs in town to see if anyone knew of someone being buried in the woods at Camp Denison. Another volunteer, Arthur Gaudette asked historian, Gloria Mania. She could not recall anything but agreed to look in her vast collection of historical notes.

Sure enough, in one of her interviews with the late Satria and Eleanor Stetson, she had recorded a note that around 1777, a son of the Perkins’s on Nelson Street was digging a cellar hole for a house for his future "Bride to be" when he died of smallpox. He was buried in the area that was known as “Oak Dell”. He was buried along a wood road that once could be seen if you walked along the old railroad bed.

A search of Georgetown records so far has not uncovered any Perkins family, but there was a Perking family living in Rowley. Georgetown was once part of Rowley as was Boxford.

Supposedly a large stone was used as a headstone to the grave. When time and weather permits, the ‘Volunteers” will carefully search to see if anything nearby fits the description of a headstone.

For those of you who enjoy hiking and cross country skiing, there are many wonderful trails available to the public at Camp Denison. It is located off Nelson Street from Route 97 just past Stewarts Auto Repair Shop. When conditions permit, the volunteers will be sponsoring a ski and snowshoe outing for all interested persons.
